All-Nighters Don’t Help!

December 14th, 2007

So I came across an article on Yahoo! that talked about how all-nighters don’t help a person when they’re attempting to study for a test. The study showed that people who had never pulled an all-nighter had higher overall GPA’s than people who did pull all-nighters.

So this study can be taken in a couple of ways. One way it can be interpreted is that sleep is important to people, and that after a certain point in time, the brain is just unable to understand anything that’s going on, making it pointless to continue to study. Another possibility that can be inferred is that the people who didn’t need to pull all-nighters were inherently smarter, therefore their GPAs are just naturally higher. I was one of those people that never pulled any all-nighters throughtout my college career (although that didn’t necessarily reflect in my grades  ) I’m also pretty sure my brother hasn’t ever pulled an all-nighter for school work, but I could be wrong, and I know Mazie never did for school work either.

I think my philosophy was more along the lines of, since I know I’m not going to do well, I’d rather at least have a good night’s sleep

So for those of you who find yourself pulling all-nighters to cram for that test or finish up that homework, learn from this study. Get your sleep, as it’ll help you more, or just get smarter!

Here’s a link to an old post my brother wrote on Test Taking. No guarantees, but it seemed to have worked for him, and look at where he’s at now!

  1. at CMU, they had the motto: “At school there are only three things that you can get: grades, sleep, or fun. Now choose two of them.”

  2. A last minute make up wouldn’t get much help especially studying same as digesting takes time.

  3. I only did one all-nighter. It was to write an essay that was actually due 3 days later. It worked out pretty well. The paper was done with one go and i had a few days to check the grammar.

On another note - Mitchell you only study 2x the length of a test??!! I am shocked & impressed. I probably studied between 15-20 hours/3hr exam. And no, i was not one of those competitive “how many hours did you study” people because it was kind of embarrassing… Anyways, as you wander around Asia, i def recommend Cambodia
