Would you be offended by this?
So Mazie and I were in Target this afternoon buying some lightbulbs. An exciting purchase I know.
Anyways, as we were walking down the aisle, coming towards us was a dad with his kid in the shopping cart. Mazie and I weren’t really paying any attention to them, but as they walked by us, the kid, probably no more than 5 years old, says to us
“Hello China.”
We keep walking, but Mazie and I both begin to just laugh since it was such a funny statement. The kid had a big smile on his face too as he said it. Mazie and I weren’t offended by this, and were amused more than anything. We could have always responded: “Hello Anglo-Saxon” or something along those lines.
However, I’m wondering if any of you would have been offended by this?
when I was really young, I still remember the moment I saw black people for the first time. excitedly, I exclaimed: “Look Mommy! There are brown people!”
my mom must have been mortified (I couldn’t understand why she would not uncover my mouth until she had successfully ushered me out of the room).

I grew up in the town of Greece where I was the only Asian in my whole graduating class. So, I would get a lot of ignorant comments and teasing as a little kid.
Once, some boy came up to me and said…” you Chinese are bad, you bombed Pearl Harbor!” I just laughed and said…duh…..that was the Japanese!

Oh one more…My mother who used to teach High school in the Rochester City school district had one of her black students come up to her and say…”Hey Mrs. Lau….are you related to Bruce Lee?” Which she quickly replied…” no, no relation… but are you related to Aunt Jemima?

Once, a girl asked my friend, Tina and I if were both sisters since we both were chinese. We both said,”no.” and the girl thought we were lying and did the “cuckoo sign” at us. then she asked Tina’s friend if Tina and I were sisters, and Tina’s friend told her the truth.
