Random Acts of Friendliness
June 16th, 2007
So earlier in the day today, Mazie and I were walking down the sidewalk over at Pittsford Plaza. As we were strolling around, this young woman started smiling while we were walking towards her. When we got close enough, she said hi to us as if we had known her. Of course, we said hi back to her. Now she may have thought that she knew us, but we then started thinking that maybe she was just being nice.
What threw us off was that we weren’t used to having a stranger smile and say hi to us out of nowhere. That got me to thinking how we shouldn’t be thrown off by having people just say hi to us even if we didn’t know them. Most of the time today, people tend to just mind their own business and don’t take the time to just be friendly to strangers. This is why you hear stories of people seeing someone in need, yet not going to help.
While it might be weird to other people, the next time you’re walking down the street and cross paths with a stranger, give them a smile and say hi! ![]()

i just said good morning to someone this morning! i love saying hello to strangers. it’s great to see them smile… though more often than not, most people see me from afar and then try to avoid eye-contact upon passing. sometimes, i’m tempted to greet them even if they’re looking at the floor. wonder why people are so stranger-phobic? it’s just “hello” or “good morning!” ^_^
