The Joys of Television

February 6th, 2007

While I don’t watch every popular show on TV, I’ve found a handful of shows that I really enjoy. There’s nothing like sitting down and relaxing with a great episode of a series that you’ve stuck with for the long haul. In addition to distracting you from harsh reality of life, it also engrosses you with complex stories, interesting characters, and emotional moments. Many people criticize this show or that, but I say, if you can get really engrossed in a show, it serves its purpose. It might not necessarily depend on its quality, but rather its personal connection with you. Of course your personal preferences do play a part in this, but its all arbitrary since we all have different tastes.

I am especially happy this week, with my coming LCD TV in the mail. And the start of a new spring line up of TV show favorites. Here’s my weekly line-up and why I like each show. (schedule as of now/ i know its a bad layout, but pictures a worth more than my formatting effort)

battlestar galactica

Battlestar Galactica
OK this show has quit possibly the worst fictional setting ever, with a “universe” that a 14-yr old could only imagine, but I caught up with this show over the summer and despite some horrible feelings about it, I find myself engrossed in the numerous plot-lines, characters, struggles. Don’t get me wrong, most of the characters irritate the heck out of me, but theres something about it that makes me want to see what will happen to this fledgling community of humans bound for Earth. I once described the characters as “watching a bunch of retarded monkeys walking around.”

Heroes TV
M O N D A Y:
Heroes
This show is great. It brings out the inner mangaka/comic-book-lover in me. Normal people in a live-action show having super-hero powers?! How much more awesome can it get. I especially love Hiro’s story line with his quest of destiny. The characters are very interesting and very diverse, but I especially appreciate the pacing in the show - there are maybe half a dozen converging storylines all happening at the same time. The length of time for each one is just enough for you to keep wanting more.

House MD
T U E S D A Y:
House, MD
It can be argued that Gregory House is one of the most interesting television personalities EVER. And from my experience of television, I would have to agree. He is so enigmatic at times, and so humorously blunt at others. The blend of CSI-styled detective-like plots, with the witty banter of Frasier, and yet the deep underlying (and engrossing) characters like Lost, make for really great and entertaining television. Also it utilizes its thematic flexibility by hitting many emotional and moral topics, all foiled against House’s blunt and grating personality.

Lost TV
W E D N E S D A Y:
LOST
This show is just crazy. The amount of curveballs it throws at you throughout the course of a single show is astounding. It’s like a conspiracy theory show like X-files, wrapped around a Survivor-like setting, with well-developed characters found in many dramas. In terms me and my friends used to use, it is the “Psyche-Out” master.

Bleach

Bleach
This show (an anime) has tons of style, while not as much as Samurai Champloo. However, unlike SC, it retains a plot and a progressive growing main character that animes are well known for. “I need to be the strongest to protect the ones I love”-type, with flashy hair styles and huge swords, I like this show for its style.

Naruto
F R I D A Y:
Naruto
I must preface this blurb with one note: I have been watching this show since its original start date, September 2002. I have watched it every week since, faithfully. This show is well-poised to be one of the greatest animes of all time. Its expansive enough to show many facets of the anime genre, from emotion begot by camaraderie, to fast paced action, to psyche out plot twists (i.e. every time Shikamaru fights someone). I have watched this show for almost 5 years, and I will continue to, because it is awesome. Most excitingly, this February 15th marks the start of Naruto II: Shipuuden, which is the continuation of the real storyline (from the manga). I have read ahead in the manga and all I have to say, I CANNOT WAIT!!!

So I guess I have one show to watch every day. This makes me very happy. I definitely will be making much use of my new 32″ LCD. I have my fill of television every week, what do you watch?

  1. A thumbs up to battlestar galactica although i haven’t seen past the 4th episode this season. I’ll watch the remainder marathon-style at some point. I’ve also been seriously considering adding Heroes to my list of shows I may want to commit to and watching the first episode.
