Quals Friday
January 14th, 2007
This is how I spent my Friday (a photo-dramatization):
Its 8:00am and I make sure everything is in order at my desk as I prepare for day 2 of my qualifying exam.

I check my duffel bag to make sure I have all my textbooks in order. Open-book tests can sometimes be advantageous, especially if you own a lot of books.

It’s 8:30am and we all make our way over to Walker. From a stranger’s view, we all look like a procession of students lugging their bags off to vacation. But little do they know that we carry our suitcases of text to our doom.

Inside Walker you notice it seems a lot like a graveyard - how neatly the tables are arranged in rows. But the gym-turned-testing-center now serves its purpose.

200 tables + 40 people taking quals = fun with desk space. I try to convince myself that I will one day have a nice big office with a real desk to work at.

For the next three hours, thoughts of deflating tennis balls, emergency nuclear reactors, swollen pieces of rubber, and ultimately suicide dance in our heads.

Me being a douche-bag, I get my picture taken while people are still taking the test.

There you have it, my Quals Friday, brought to you by the kind folks in course X.
OMG I hope I pass. I seriously never want to do this ever again.
*Edit: I also realized I spent at least 60 hours studying for this test.

The Head Proctor (the professor in charge of the whole qual process) was the one who took the picture of me - he was actually the one to suggest it.
