Grad School life

October 25th, 2006

On many of my visits to grad schools, someone would ask how the grad students like the campus at large.
Almost always, the reply was the same: you never get to see all of the campus; all you do is go back and forth between home and the lab.

After being here at grad school for almost two months, I would have to concur. In fact, I would say that grad school life consists of cycling through three different places: Places of Study, Places of Food, Places of Sleep. Rinse, Recyle, Repeat ad nauseum.

My regular day consists of waking up, going to class, eating lunch, staying the office till dinner or later (more often the latter), then going home to sleep.

Pretty much summed up in this quote from the Simpsons, which the Nth year grad students showed to us first years on our first day of class.

homer grad
Bart: [holding a pony tail to his head] Look at me, I’m a grad student. I’m 30 years old and I made $600 last year.
Marge: Bart, don’t make fun of grad students. They’ve just made a terrible life choice.

Anyways, I have thermo test tomorrow. So i’ll leave you with this Thermo quote:

“Thermodynamics is a funny subject. The first time you go through it, you don’t understand it at all. The second time you go through it, you think you understand it, except for one or two small points. The third time you go through it, you know you don’t understand it, but by that time you are so used to it, it doesn’t bother you any more.” Arnold Sommerfeld

Pathetic? perhaps. Sad? only if you let it get to your head.

  1. Work is not any better.

Church and fellowship are still highlights in my life.
