Iron Chef YMT Style!
April 29th, 2006
During lunch last week with a few members of the Youth Ministry Team, the idea was thrown around about a get together where we would hold our own version of the TV show Iron Chef. After some discussion, plans were formalized, and a time/location were set to hold the event. However, unlike the actual show, instead of everyone using the same ingredient, each person would be assigned a random ingredient, and would have to cook a dish based upon that ingredient. Judges would be present to decide who out of the group cooked the best dish.
The cooks for the night were Eric, Tom, Cathy, Mazie, and myself. We each had our own ingredient to use, and had to cook enough food for the judges (Ben, Linda, Dave, Alli) to try. The ingredients that were chosen, beef for Eric, sweet sausage for Tom, tofu for Cathy, shrimp for Mazie, and Broccoli for me.
Being the gourmet chef that I am, I had joked about just bringing a veggie and dip platter to cover my broccoli ingredient. However, I ended up staying away from that idea, and went with the wonderful entree of beef and broccoli!
Mazie made wontons with shrimp, and a seafood stew. Being the food connoisseur that I am, I have no idea how to even describe Cathy’s, Tom’s, and Eric’s dishes, other than they were all good.
Unfortunately, my beef and broccoli dish wasn’t a favorite of the judges, so I ended up in last place. The entree with the best overall taste, creativity, and presentation belonged to none other than Eric! His beef dish was definitely very good. Even though I ended up losing, at least I can say that the kids there all liked my dish as one of the best there! Maybe I should solely cook for children instead of other adults.
It was still lots of fun, and a good time of fellowship. Everyone definitely did a good job with their dishes.
I’ve uploaded a few pictures from the night so that you guys can see the food that was cooked, and other assorted pictures. Also, be on the look out for the many faces of Sammy!
I leave you with a picture of the desserts that Dave made. Bon A petit! ![]()

I helped Dave and Rachel prepare your desserts. Creme brulee… no comment on Dave’s “technique” besides I’m scared for life.
