Test Taking Skillz
October 19th, 2005

So lots of people ask me for advice: “Mitchell, how can I be tall? Mitchell, how can I manage my time? Mitchell, how can I be like you?” But very few people ask me about my only real talent: Test taking.
So here’s some practical advice that I like to use to pass my tests:
1) Speed - tests are not for critical thinking. Go as fast as the wind. If you are the first or second person to hand in your test, then you’re in good shape. Think fast or be left behind. Practical uses of this is that you have plenty of time to work on the harder problems because you get through the easy stuff so fast.
2) First Pass, Only Pass - The test is meant to be taken only once. So only take it once. Advice #1 was meant to improve your speed. This advice is meant to improve your accuracy. Double checking is for losers, so be cool and be smart: get it right the first time.
3) Don’t Panic! - When you’re studying, and especially when you’re taking the test, don’t lose your cool. Panicking wastes precious time and brain cells that are better used to solve problems.
4) Confidence - Go to the test thinking you’re the superstar. Even if you eventually get owned by it, theres nothing worse than worrying about a test. So study up, and then relax.
5) Preparation - Study only twice the length of time of the actual exam, plus or minus one hour. Anything more is superfluous, and anything less is reckless. This can help you gauge your time, and schedule your study time. Which in turns helps you to focus when you study and not just read blogs like this.
6) Leave with no regrets - Life is full of mistakes. It’s how you respond to them that makes the difference. Tests are only a minor part of your life, and mistakes on tests are even smaller. Only have regrets when you went too fast through the test that you actually skipped a page. Then beat yourself silly for such a stupid mistake.
7) Pray to God - Hey, it never hurts. Strengthen your walk with Jesus as you face trials and “tests”.
