Do you know what you really believe?
October 16th, 2005
Do you know what you really believe in? I ask this, because yesterday, I came across this thread in a forum that I guess some Asian kids in Rochester have started. Some of the YG are also members, and I was invited to join the forum. I noticed a thread on Christianity verses Atheism, so I decided to take a look. There was a post about “contradictions” in the Bible. Even though debating on an internet forum is pretty pointless and usually results in flame wars, I figured I’d post a response to these so called “contradictions” detailing one by one why they weren’t really contradictions.
This continued back and forth and I even got my brother to help me out and respond too. However, in the end, when you go up against someone who’s already closed minded in their beliefs, then it becomes pointless arguing, which is what that thread was becoming. But it got me thinking, as a Christian, are you capable of defending what you believe? Is your faith strong enough to weather a debate with someone? Even if that someone is “smarter” than you? I’d hope that as a Christian, you’d be able to stand up for what you believe, and be firm in your faith, and not afraid of what others may say.
Just be careful when getting into such debates though. As Proverbs 23:9 says: “Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words.” And as Mazie told me from Proverbs 26:4 “Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself.” So don’t get caught up in flame wars! ![]()

You know, some times we as Christians do take our faith for granted (or at least I tend to), and forget WHY it’s so awesome to be a Christian. We forget what made us first crawl to Jesus Christ and ask for forgiveness, let alone remember to try to show others why they should come. I know for myself that when I get into a great witnessing situation or a discussion on different religions, I don’t know enough about my own let alone other religions to really be persuasive. I have recently been learning over and over that I need to PREPARE myself on defending my faith BEFORE I get into the sticky situation’s, that way, not only will my faith not waver, but others may be drawn to the one true Saviour of our souls-Jesus Christ, the Truest Friend! Let’s (all who read this that agree and I) prepare ourselves for these battles, how you say? MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE, ASK OURSELVES WHAT WE BELIEVE, WHY WE BELIEVE IT, AND HOW HAS IT EFFECTED US, and RESEARCH OTHER COMMON BELIEFS/ARGUEMENTS FOR OTHER RELIGIONS OR AGAINST OURS. If we do this, we will grow as Christians, and others may be saved.
Heb 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
