Prayer Cards and more!
August 21st, 2005
We’re back from the retreat at Camp Asbury! I’d have to say along with most everyone else that went that it was defintiely a great time and an encouraging time as well. It was definitely a blessing being able to work with the youth groupers and having the opportunity to serve them. Pictures from the retreat as well as the senior banquet are now posted in the photo album. Read on for a recap of the weekend:
The theme for this years retreat was “One Way, God’s Way“. We didn’t have a speaker this year, but instead had Dave, my brother and I give the messages throughout the weekend. The messages focused around the life of Kind David, as well as King Asa, and about the decisions and choices they made.
The first message which I gave on Friday night dealt with how if we’re right with God, then God is on our side. Psalm 18 was the passage, where David was praising God for saving him and protecting him. The second message led by Dave, was about King Asa and how even though he started off as a good king, he deviated from God’s will for him and never repented and ended up turning from God. It’s a reminder that we need to take inventory of where we are in our lives, and whether or not we’re truly walking with God and seeking God in all the choices we make.
Mitchell taught the third message which centered on repentance. This message went back to King David and how even though he made the wrong choices and sinned, he turned back to God, repented, and continued to live his life for God. This didn’t mean that there weren’t any consquences, but instead that God forgave him, which allowed David to not dwell in his past sins, but to focus on what he could do for God in the future. The final message was once again taught by Dave and was a good wrap up as to how we need to keep the way and walk with God. Turning away from sin, spending time with God, having fellowship with other believers, and most importantly, serving God.
In addition to the messages this year, we introduced the idea of prayer cards. Mazie had come up with the idea of using “Trading cards” as a way for us to help others remember to pray for each other. Each person at the retreat got a deck of cards, with their picture on them. Throughout the weekend, they were to write down their prayer requests and give them to everyone else who was there at the retreat. Overall, I’d have to say that this was one of the things that a good amount of people seemed to enjoy. A collage of the prayer cards is in the photo album. Hopefully we can all continue to remember to pray for each other.
For our workshop this year, we had worksheets for everyone to be able to work on their testimonies and take a look at where they were in their lives in their walks with God. They drew out on a graph where they felt their spiritual walk had been and took notes of the low points as well as the high points. It was definitely encouraging to hear people share their testimonies and to see how God has worked in their lives, or just how they’ve gotten to this point in their lives.
Overall, the weekend went really well and was once again a great time to fellowhip with one another, and more importantly to fellowship with God. It was amazing watching God just work through everyone and also in seeing the whole retreat come together smoothly. Hopefully for those that went, you guys can all remember what you’ve learned this weekend and apply it to your own lives. ![]()
