7 Tips to Time Management

February 3rd, 2005

Many of my friends have wondered: “Where does Mitchell get all his free time?! And where can I get some of that?” Well, I’m here to tell you theres plenty of me to go around, and indeed you too can become a MASTER OF TIME-MANAGEMENT.
Heres how:

1. Know your limits: Understand that you are a finite person, with finite skills, and finite time. Acknowledging this will help keep you from being overwhelmed. Sure you might want to join the soccer team, the dart club, alcoholics anonymous, help local charities, and get 2 degrees on the way to med-school, but sometimes it just isn’t feasible.

2. Take Responsibility: Embrace a deep responsibility in the things that you do pursue. As the Andrew Carnegie Maxim goes: “My heart is in the work.” If there are things that you don’t want to do, find ways to start enjoying those things you do. Anybody can drop things at the first sign of dullness, but it takes a real authentic person to think critically and change their attitudes to love those things that they do. Work with purpose, work with passion.

3. Be Diligent: Let me just put this out: Procrastination is for losers. Of course that sometimes includes me, but dilly-dallying on work is something to be looked down upon and shunned. Its not cool to waste time when you have responsibilities. Remember: Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. If Procrastination is really a problem for you, read what this guy has to say (ironically, clicking this link will further propgate your procrastination in reading this entry in its entirety).

4. Work da’ Skillz: A lesson in Efficiency. Effective work habits and efficient thought are products of practice and work. What is the fastest you can go without losing accuracy or strength of will. If you can optimize your work habits, you can excel in time management. Its all about speed. You will end up working faster and expending less energy than your neighbor. Remember: All things being equal, fat people use more soap.

5. Play Tetris with your Life: This is fun, but sometimes it can backfire. In order to maximize free time, you need to minimize lag time. Lag time is the time between two events, which includes travel time and just waiting in general. If you can pack all the things you can do down, then your left with a lot of free time up top, just like Tetris.

6. Stress: Stress builds up commensurately with the packing of your schedule. So spend that extra free time cutting back and doing whatever it is that makes you relax. Quantify which activities reduce the most amounts of stress, and choose those activities which respectively amend your stress level.

7. Productively Waste Time: OK, now that you’re better at time management, you will have large chunks of time left (possibly 4 or 5 hours at a time). This is the tricky part: Spend this time doing activities that will pass the time so you don’t get bored - in effect wasting it. And don’t do anything that is mentally (or sometimes physically) demanding. However, do something at the very least so that when asked you aren’t just doing nothing. Reading or Watching Anime or Playing Games all count as productive wastes of time.

There you have it. An effective pathway to freetime. Using this method will give you more free time, a happier outlook on life, and more active mind and body, and whiter teeth. Just be sure to breath every so often.
