Where Hell Freezes Over
January 27th, 2005
So if you’re currently residing in the northeast, you’ve begun to notice that it is a tad cold outside. You step outside and have the breath of life sucked right out of you into the arctic winds. You start to shiver uncontrollably to maintain your fast-dwindling heat reserves. You desperately try not to look like a fool (or a giant blueberry) while still covering every inch of your body with insulation. Your face stings; your teeth chatter; and the last time you could feel your feet was when you stubbed it on some ice.
Now thats the sound of Winter.
Coldness reveals a lot of things about a person, however. For one thing, it reveals your tolerance of pain; not to mention the amount of fat covering that body of yours. It even shows glimpses of your background and upbringing. But I think it reveals even more: I believe it is one of God’s ways of raising humble, down to earth children.
Think about it, one of the most natural ways to experience suffering is through climate. Growing up in a place where 75% of your time is spent coping with mild suffering teaches you a lot, both in integrity and in perseverance. Its too cold to cause trouble, but just right to spend time hanging out with close friends. You’re more resourceful, since you can do things to keep yourself warm (as opposed to the dearth of activities available to keep yourself cool). Finally, you learn to respect God’s Creation - His Beautifully Bitter Creation. The world becomes pure, innocent, and as white as snow.
Wait, that is snow.
