A Perspective that’s Taller than Yours

The Other Side of the Road

December 26th, 2004

Well, my brother and I have been in Taiwan for 3 days now and have met up with both sides of the family. We’ve had good Chinese food, and even better fruit that you can’t get in the States. And yes, we’re still a good head taller than pretty much everyone we meet, other than my Dad’s family, although we’re still taller by a little.

However, one thing that we’ve both noticed is the driving. If you’ve ever ridden in your parents car, or in a friends car and have been scared cause you think they aren’t the safest of drivers, you haven’t been to Taiwan yet and witnessed the driving over here. It is downright crazy!

Traffic lights, road markings, and signs are all optional, and only necessary if you happen to see a cop around. Red only sometimes means stop, yellow is just another light, and green means hurry up. On the roads, you have cars competing with mopeds, bikes, people, and animals. Cars will drive on both sides of the road in the same direction even though it’s a meant for both directions. Mopeds drive on the side of the road, and always seem to be a moments away from getting run over. Dogs are also so used to the traffic that they just lie on the side of the road and aren’t phased by cars at all.

I’m amazed that I have yet to see any accidents here. With how people drive, you’d think that there’d be an accident at every intersection. Come to Taiwan, ride in someone’s car, and you’ll be scared to death. If you don’t look both ways here, you will be run over when crossing the street. I also have a feeling that the person who hits you will just keep driving too.

Hope everyone’s enjoying all that snow back in Rochester! Me and my brother are getting eaten alive by the bugs here, but we can’t complain about the nice tropical weather. :)

  2. the drivers fall into two categories: the skilled and the suck. the skilled are good enough drivers to avoid everyone else that shouldn’t be behind the wheel

  3. haha yea, the skilled and those that suck. I’m thinking this is also why Asian drivers are stereotyped as BAD drivers.
