Hot Dogs, Buns, and Donald Duck

December 14th, 2004

Dear Confused, aka Mike,

You’ve asked some great questions to start off our Ask Taibro column. Let’s start with the question of why hot dogs come in packages of 10 while the buns come in packages of 8. There is actually an answer for this too. Hot dogs come in packages of 10, becuase the companies wanted to make packaging easier. A pack of hot dogs weighs 1 pound, which is equivalent to 10 hot dogs. Nice and simple for them to package and sell.

Now as for the buns, they come in packs of 8 not because they’re out to try and make you buy 2 bags, for your 10 hot dogs, but because they’re bakers and as we all know, bakers don’t know how to count. Hence why we have a baker’s dozen being equal to 13. However, bakers do like to count by the dozens, which means that they also like multiples/factors of 12: 3, 4. So they decided to go about their typical counting and create a bag of 8 which is more to their liking. The bakers just never got together with the hot dog companies to make it easier for people.

Moving on to Donald Duck. Why does Donald wear a towel after the shower even though he doens’t typically wear pants? I say it’s because he doesn’t want to walk around with wet duck feathers. How annoying that would be if he had to walk around and get everything wet. Also, why are you even paying attention to what Donald Duck wears when he comes out of the shower? :-P

Please leave more questions for the Taibros in the comments, and we’ll try to answer them as soon as possible.
