Vote or Die?
November 3rd, 2004
With election day over, and the results coming in, most likely with Bush winning Ohio and the election, I tried to find articles that talked about voters in my age grouping. According to the article, only 1 out of 10 people within the ages of 18-24 came out to vote. While more young voters came out which is good, it’s still a pretty weak ratio compared to those that registered. On the whole, more voters turned out to vote, I think the percentage of eligible voters was around 60% which is the a very high turnout for elections, which is a very good sign. I’m thinking it’s mostly because people had a pretty strong opinion about Bush one way or the other which caused them to actually come out. Had there been no problems during his presidency, I’m thinking that probably around 50% of eligible voters would’ve come out.
So what about those young voters? All those efforts on college campuses to get people to vote. 9 out of 10 not voting after registered is a pretty bad number. Especially with all the effort into getting people to go vote. I’m thinking that those that actually did go and vote from this age group would’ve gone and voted regardless of whether or not they were registered through an event or organization trying to get people to register. Those that didn’t vote probably just signed up to get people to leave them alone. Like I said in a previous post it’s not about getting people to sign up to vote, it’s about teaching them the issues. Just getting people to register doesn’t really mean all that much, and unless a draft were to happen in this country or some drastic change were to occur, I really doubt voters in the age group of 18-24 will ever really care.
So I’m guessing that those 9 out of 10 voters will now die according to P. Diddy.
Aww, I also didn’t get an “I voted” sticker.
