Middle Chapter of the Bible
October 24th, 2004
Well, today during the sermon at the Rochester Chinese Christian Church, I found out a new piece of information and I thought that I’d pass it along to you. I’m sure many people have heard this following piece of information before:
What is the shortest chapter in the Bible?
(Answer - Psalms 117)
What is the longest chapter in the Bible?
(Answer - Psalms 119)
Which chapter is in the center of the Bible?
(Answer - Psalms 118) *
Fact: There are 594 chapters before Psalms 118.
Fact: There are 594 chapters after Psalms 118.
Add these numbers up and you get 1188.
What is the center verse in the Bible?
(Answer - Psalms 118:8) *Does this verse say something significant about God’s perfect will for our lives? The next time someone says they would like to find God’s perfect will for their lives and that they want to be in the center of His will, just send them to the center of His Word!
“It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” Psalms 118:8 (NKJV)
Now isn’t that odd how this worked out (or was God in the center of it)?
Well, today I found out that that is actaully false. The middle chapter of the Bible is actually Psalm 117. Apparently the speaker actually counted and also, it’s shown here.
Hopefully you are now more informed than before, because knowing is half the battle!

I want the 30 seconds of my life back that I spent reading that.

:roll:Boy, now which sounds like it must be true? Did you count all the verses? I think I’ll believe the former - something God would do - scenario!
So where’d you come up with the contradiction?

Psalm 117 is the center.
“Boy, now which sounds like it must be true? Did you count all the verses?”
I hope this Neal guy was joking. The guy counted up the CHAPTERS of course, which can be done easily in less than an hour.
Anyhow, who says God didn’t design it this way? The central chapter is also the shortest chapter - Psalm 117! That’s much more elegant than that whole silly 118 message someone erroneously thought up.
“It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.†Indeed.
