You Lose!

October 4th, 2004

With all the election news currently going on caused me to think of what happens when someone you vote for turns out to be a failure. What happens when a person puts their heart and soul working for a person, campaigning for a person only to have that person lose? Or even better, what happens when the person you vote for wins, yet turns out to be terrible in their elected position?

This can be hard to debate for Presidents as Presidents even if they have their downfalls, usually have more going well for them than going wrong. You also can’t say that President Bush was a failure becuase he’s still in office and you’ll have to wait maybe 5-10 years after he’s finally out of office to see if he really was a failure or success. But what about those in lower positions that are elected? Positions where it’s easier to see if the person was a success or failure.

In this day and age, I think that most people who end up supporting someone who fails in their position, will just blame it on something else. “I was misinformed,” “The (other party) kept them from doing what they wanted,” “The other candidate would have done even worse.” Very few people would say that they just simply voted for a bad candidate. This is especially true for the Presidency. There’s always blame to be spread and never accountability to be had.

People always think their candidate is better than the other one, but if that candidate were to turn out to actually be worse, excuses are then made, and blame is shifted to someone or something else. If people can support their candidate so much, and it actually turns out that they were a failure, people need to also be able to say that they were simply wrong. No excuses, no passing of blame. You either win, or you lose… ties don’t happen outside of sports.
