A summer in review

August 19th, 2004

Well, seeing how the summer’s winding down I figured I might as well write my review of how my summer went. So here goes, my summer in review.

In one phrase, I can describe my entire summer: free-time! I definitely had plenty of it. Since coming back home in May, I’ve pretty much almost 3 full months of being at home. For those of you that haven’t really been keeping up with this site, I wrote in the beginning of June some of the things that I wrote about were talked about in the post “My Summer“. My parents didn’t really force me to take a job, so I didn’t really try to. I applied to Blockbuster, and Payless Shoestores, both of which never got back to me. Guess having an Electrical Engineering Degree doesn’t pay off. It would’ve been nice to enjoy those free rentals had I actually worked at Blockbuster. I could’ve gone to work at Seabreeze since my mom knew someone’s son who worked there and they could’ve gotten me a job, but I decided not to and just enjoy my freedom at home. This is really the only time in my life where I’ll be able to not have to work and enjoy living at home… so I did!

Now, I wasn’t completely doing nothing during this time. I went to Midtown Athletic Club almost every single day for 2 months. I haven’t really been going these past few weeks since I hurt my wrist lifting. I had said that I wanted to get a real 6-pack, but even with all the cardio/ab stuff I did, I still wasn’t able to get one. I guess I needed to watch my diet more, but I wasn’t planning on starving myself or not eating whatever I wanted to. Even though I haven’t been working out these past few weeks, I should start working out again when I move over to Buffalo. Gotta take advantage of the facilities they have there.

Other than just working out, I would spend my days reading, working on this website, watching tv, or just running errands. It’s surprising how fast a day goes by even if you’re not really doing all that much. I enjoyed every single day being able to just relax and be at home. As far as reading goes, I finished reading 9 books, and I’m currently reading my 10th book of this summer. Not too bad reading 10 books in the span of 3 months. Prolly could’ve read more, but I tend to buy the books I read and not borrow them from the library so the cost would’ve added up after awhile. I was also able to learn a good amount of web design too by working on this webpage and just fixing things here and there and trying to get this site to look how I want it to look.

Some of the highlites this summer would have to be 4th of July weekend when I not only got to goto a wonderful wedding for Mike and Pam, but my wonderful girlfriend Mazie flew into Rochester to be my date to the wedding. It was definitely a great time. Next would have to be when I went to Chicago for a weekend to go visit her. Went to a Cubs v. Phillies game which was very fun, and best of all I got to see Mazie again. The YG retreat was also a definite highlite as we went to Camp Asbury and enjoyed great sermons from Chris Pollack. Also got to hang out with the YG kids seeing how I was one of their “advisors” this summer. The Music camp was also a great time. It’s always a treat to be able to work with kids and just to watch them learn and grow in God.

Next up for me after this summer’s over is graduate school at the University at Buffalo. I’ll be moving into my apartment next week and living with a Chinese PhD student who I’ve never met and only talked over the phone with a few times. It’ll definitely be interesting going over to Buffalo. It’s kind of like going to undergrad, except that this time it’s grad school and there isn’t as great an emphasis to go out and meet all the different freshman who’ll be going there with you. The program should be fast, 1.5 to 2 years and I’ll be trying to look for a job. Church wise, I’ll be trying the Buffalo Chinese Christian Church and see how that is. I probably won’t do any fellowship groups like IV or Campus Crusade or anything like that unless they have one directly geared towards grad students. I’ll just have to try the college fellowship group over at BCCC. I’m a little worried that the church will be a little too chinese for me, in which case I’ll have to find a different church to goto. There’s always the possibility of coming back home and going to RCCC on Sundays. I’ll just have to wait and see how things go when I finally move over there.

While some people might’ve been bored out of their minds not having anything to do for an entire 3 months, I really enjoyed the time that I had off. I’ve enjoyed being at home and the ability to just rest and relax. I’m definitely blessed with a wonderful family and a wonderful girlfriend. So that pretty much wraps up my summer. Another week left before I move in, so another week to just relax. Gotta also “get ready” for grad school.

There you have it, a review of my summer!
